I’ve used these twice in the past with average results. My teeth certainly did get whiter, but lacked an even colour. Also the trays meant that the process was messy and a bit of an inconvenience. Laser Teeth Whitening + U.V Light Teeth Whitening

Of course, with laser tooth whitening you are looking at a cosmetic procedure done under the supervision of a cosmetic dentist. Teeth whitening gel is also used for this method however the laser or UV light will activate the hydrogen peroxide faster and make it work quickly.

This is usually a good method but obviously extremely expensive and can’t be done at home. It may require a few visits to your cosmetic dentist. UV lights have also started to be sold online for this process. However, I wouldn’t recommend buying these as UV lights are extremely damaging to skin (hence why we wear sun cream on our skin..now imagine that UV light on your gums!!) and this shouldn’t be done at home.

Normally you’ll receive two clear, plastic trays in these tooth whitening kits that look like mouthguards and in actual fact, they work similarly to a mouthguard in the sense that you are looking for a perfect fit for your mouth!

The first problem with these trays is that you have to stick them in boiling water for a few seconds and then bite down hard and mould the plastic tray to fit perfectly with your mouth. Now, you literally have a few seconds and one shot to get this right otherwise your kit becomes useless!

I’ve messed up a few trays before and it’s frustrating! It becomes a waste of money. One of my trays messed up before I even got it in my mouth! I left it in the water for a second too long and when I took it out it was so floppy it folded up and got stuck to the other side of the tray! A real nightmare..They cool down quickly too so you don’t get time to sort it!

With a teeth whitening pen, you eliminate this first very annoying problem! In fact you save yourself the time and aggrevation by skipping this step completely!

Now the compound used to whiten teeth is the same in both the teeth whitening gels and the teeth whitening pens (both use hydrogen peroxide a gentle compound that oxidizes stains and acts as a bleaching agent for whiteness). However, with the trays you need to sit there with a tray filled with gel in your mouth for ten minutes. It was a bit of an inconvenience for me if truth be told. Also it is difficult to get the right amount of gel into the tray. You have to squeeze the teeth whitening gel out of a syringe into the tray.

This is all well and good but it leaves room for error because if you don’t distribute the gel evenly, then some teeth may get more gel than the rest which could cause uneven whitening. I found certain teeth of mine were less white than others after a while using this method.

Then you have the problem at the oppositte end of the scale…if you mistakenly put too much into the tray (it’s easily done) then when you bite down, the gel overflows onto your gums which can be quite irritating as the gel isn’t designed to go on the gums. This happened to me on a number of occasions.

When I received my teeth whitening pen I didn’t have such problems at all. You can be really precise with the pen and it also uses the same hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening product in the ingredients, (the one I used also had other whitening ingredients that worked synergistically with the hydrogen peroxide to work faster than the trays did for me..my teeth were also so much whiter than when I used the trays!).

You also don’t have to sit there with silly trays in your mouth during your day..with the teeth whitening pen you literally spend a few minutes in front of the mirror “colouring in” your teeth if you will! It’s actually quite fun! Then you just go about your day while the product works on giving you a brilliant white smile!
